This session will introduce participants to the fundamental concepts and principles of health care ethics, covering common topics like patient capacity, surrogate decision-making, medical futility, and end-of-life dilemmas. Additionally, this session will discuss how ethics services are integrated into various environments, including consult services, ethics committees, inpatient and outpatient services, and community-based programs.

Research confirms that trauma is pervasive among professionals and patients. Traumatic events can dysregulate the stress response system and be associated with psychiatric and physical disorders. When a patient has a trauma history, but it is not addressed, it may explain why medical conditions remain refractory. Additionally, health care services and clinical medicine can be retraumatizing and may cause some patients not to engage in needed health care. Thus, it is important for physicians to become trauma informed: understand the role trauma plays in their patients’ lives, know how to screen for it, how to respond to it and when to refer, as well as be aware of evidenced based treatments.
Between 2020 and 2060, the number of older adults is projected to increase by 69%, from 56 million to nearly 95 million. The number of people in the U.S. ages 85 and older is projected to nearly triple from 6.7 million in 2020 to 19 million by 2060. Yet over the next 20 years, the U.S. is projected to train 20-40% less hospice and palliative care specialists than needed to keep up with this rapidly aging population.
In this session, Mr. Mercado will cover best practices to address patient follow-up, noncompliance and documentation in order to promote safe patient care.
