Description
This course will review the research foundation for behavioral treatment for stimulant use disorder, in particular cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as current issues with stimulant use. Essential elements of these treatments, as well as challenges with the use of these treatments, will be discussed. We will also address current implementation efforts to increase the use of these treatments. The course will highlight the recent ASAM-AAAP guidelines for the treatment of stimulant use disorder.

Richard A. Rawson, Ph.D., is currently a Research Professor at the Vermont Center for Behavior and Health at the University of Vermont and a Professor Emeritus at the UCLA Department of Psychiatry. His work has focused on the development of effective treatments for addiction and promoting the use of these treatments. He has led addiction research and training projects for the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the U.S. State Department, and the Institute of Peace, exporting science-based addiction knowledge to many parts of the world. When he returned to Vermont in 2015 after 40 years at UCLA, he evaluated the Vermont hub-and-spoke system of care for individuals addicted to opioids and is currently assisting Vermont treatment providers in delivering effective treatment for individuals addicted to cocaine and methamphetamine. He has edited 3 books and has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
