Description

This workshop will present evidence-based information and treatment related to the identification and treatment of pregnant and postpartum women who are experiencing mental health issues.  The presenters will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues and disorders, such as peripartum and postpartum depression; anxiety disorders; OCD; postpartum mania and psychosis; and the influence of hormonal fluctuations in perinatal psychiatric conditions.  The workshop will also address the unique challenges of substance use disorder faced during the perinatal period, contrasting traditional treatment approaches for pregnant women and recommendations based on the most recent research data.

Zobeida Diaz, M.D., M.S., is the interim Division Director and attending psychiatrist within the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health at Women and Infants Hospital in Rhode Island.  Dr. Diaz received her bachelor of science degree in microbiology at the University of Michigan, her master of science degree in cellular and molecular biology at the University of Wisconsin, and earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health.  She completed her adult psychiatry residency training at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Since joining the Center for Women's Behavioral Health, she has been caring for women in the country’s first mother-baby partial hospital program.  Dr. Diaz identifies and coordinates treatment of women with postpartum depression with brexanolone, the first FDA-approved medication for postpartum depression, and serves as a psychiatric consultant with the Rhode Island MomsPRN program.  Her primary clinical and academic interests include women’s mental health, eating disorders, and medical education.

Anupriya Gogne, MD is an adult psychiatrist with training in addiction psychiatry and women’s mental health.  Dr. Gogne has a special interest in working with women presenting with both addiction and psychiatric issues, and also has experience with treatment of trauma and dialectical behavior therapy.
