Description

"There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river.  We need to go upstream and find out why they're falling in." - Desmond Tutu

In today’s politically charged climate, where systemic inequalities are increasingly visible in both the public sphere and the therapy room, clinicians are increasingly required to understand and respond to the profound impact of political and social structures on patients. In this workshop, we will explore how clinicians can integrate a systemic analysis into their practice, going beyond individual pathology to address the broader social determinants of health that shape mental well-being. Drawing on a strong intersectional framework, we’ll examine the ways systemic oppression—rooted in race, class, gender, and other axes of power—impacts individual mental health. Through real-world examples, we’ll discuss how organizing, activism, and collective action can serve as powerful clinical interventions, empowering both patients and providers to confront these structural forces. Participants will learn how to identify patterns of systemic impact, develop strategies to challenge inequities, and incorporate an upstream approach to healing that embraces social justice as central to mental health care.
