Firearms are the leading means of death by suicide. Medications are the leading means of attempted suicide. Reducing a client's access to those lethal means may save your client's life, yet counseling clients to dispose of or give away firearms or medication may not be practical, possible, or clinically appropriate. This workshop will focus on how to effectively counsel your clients who may have access to firearms or dangerous medications on minimizing access to those suicide means. It covers how to: (1) identify people who could benefit from lethal means counseling, (2) ask about their access to lethal methods, and (3) work with them—and their families—to reduce access.

Tom Delaney is an associate professor and researcher at the UVM Larner College of Medicine whose work focuses on supporting health care and mental health care providers to deliver high quality, evidence-based services. He teaches suicide epidemiology and prevention at the UVM Larner College of Medicine, and has developed or co-developed a number of suicide prevention education presentations and resources. He is currently the program evaluator for two statewide suicide prevention projects in Vermont.
Elaine Frank is an injury prevention and public health professional who has focused her recent work at the intersection of firearm safety and suicide prevention. She is the co-developer of CALM--Counseling on Access to Lethal Means--and co-chair of the New Hampshire firearm safety coalition that created the Gun Shop Project and other efforts to engage the firearm community in preventing suicide.
Discuss the regional data on suicide deaths and self-harming behavior by method, focusing on firearms and medications.
Explain the association between having access to lethal means and suicide, and the contribution that reducing access has for preventing suicide.
Explain why lethal means counseling is an effective strategy for suicide prevention as part of a larger suicide prevention plan.
Use the methods presented to work with clients and families to reduce their access to lethal means.
