Cultural Competency as a Core Ethical Value
This presentation from Dr. Usha Tummala-Narra concerns the central importance of cultural competence in psychotherapy and supervision. The presenter will explore the role of sociocultural context in psychotherapy, focusing on a framework for the systematic inclusion of cultural competence as a core value and ethical principle in psychodynamic psychotherapy and supervision. In applying this framework, there will be a special emphasis on exploring identity among immigrants and the 2nd generation in U.S. society. The presenter will explore the role of discrimination and stereotyping, the experience of multiple identities, and marginalization and privilege among racial minority immigrant-origin people. She will underscore the importance of recognizing unconscious processes underlying identifications concerning race and gender in particular, and the sociopolitical contexts associated with these identifications. She will provide clinical vignettes that will help to foster discussion with audience members, focusing on relevant ethical and clinical dilemmas that arise in the therapeutic relationship.
Ethical Considerations When Working with Children & Families
Dr. Heather Veague will discuss a range of distinctive and complex ethical dilemmas presented by working with children and families in therapeutic settings. While the professional ethics codes offer valuable guidance, even experienced professionals might encounter ambiguous ethical situations. Moreover, as therapists increasingly extend their services across state boundaries, they become exposed to nuanced legal variations related to care provision. This presentation aims to outline a pragmatic strategy to assist therapists in recognizing indicators that they might be entering ethically precarious ground and emphasizes a pragmatic and actionable approach to effectively address such situations.
How Do I Know You? Ethical Pitfalls and Dilemmas in Dual Relationships
In this presentation, Kurt White, LICSW, LADC, will explore some common dilemmas that emerge as we encounter past, present, and anticipated future dual relationships with clients in psychotherapy settings. Special issues such as working in small communities (whether based on population size or working with a specialized group that one encounters in multiple ways), working with other professionals/healthcare workers, and special considerations when working in community mental health and outreach settings. Models and frameworks of decision making will be explored, and case examples presented.
