Description

This lecture will be organized around the different classes of psychiatric medications (antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, etc.). We will review evidence based indications for these medicines  and common side effects. We will also discuss mechanisms of action, newer classes of medications (for addiction, dementia), and special considerations (pregnancy and pharmacogenomic testing). Questions are encouraged to foster an open discussion about how psychiatrists and psychologists can collaborate with one another towards optimal recovery for their patients.

This session is at the introductory level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

  1. Define pharmacologic classes of medications.
  2. List evidence based indications for each class of medications.
  3. Recognize side effects for each class of medications.

Courses sponsored by the Vermont Psychological Association are pre-approved for continuing education for psychologists by the Vermont Board of Psychological Examiners.  This course qualifies for 3 continuing education credits.

VT LICSW

Continuing education courses sponsored by the Vermont Psychological Association are pre-approved by the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation for continuing education credit for licensed independent clinical social workers in Vermont.  This course provides 3 CE credits for Vermont licensing.

The Vermont Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. The Vermont Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association as a continuing education sponsor for psychologists.  Continuing education credit in the amount of 3 credits earned in this course may be accepted by the Connecticut Department of Public Health for licensed clinical social workers under Conn. Agencies Regs. § 20-195o(c)-3.

Nick Allen, M.D., attended the University of Kansas, where he earned his chemical engineering degree and doctorate of medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency and consultation-liaison fellowship at Mayo Clinic, where he now works as a hospitalist on medical-psychiatry services. He is passionate about learning and teaching in interdisciplinary settings.
