This lecture will be organized around the different classes of psychiatric medications (antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, etc.). We will review evidence based indications for these medicines and common side effects. We will also discuss mechanisms of action, newer classes of medications (for addiction, dementia), and special considerations (pregnancy and pharmacogenomic testing). Questions are encouraged to foster an open discussion about how psychiatrists and psychologists can collaborate with one another towards optimal recovery for their patients.
This session is at the introductory level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

Nick Allen, M.D., attended the University of Kansas, where he earned his chemical engineering degree and doctorate of medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency and consultation-liaison fellowship at Mayo Clinic, where he now works as a hospitalist on medical-psychiatry services.
