Description

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental health condition that is overrepresented in many clinical settings, and is associated with severe consequences. Yet BPD is often misunderstood. This workshop focuses on provided evidence-based conceputalizations related to the onset and course of this illness over time, its core domains of dysfunction, and potential screening and treatment options.

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

1. Describe borderline personality disorder (BPD)

2. Identify populations most at risk for elevated BPD

3. Identify screening tools to detect BPD

4. Summarize the etiology and trajectory of BPD symptoms

5. Highlight core areas of difficulties in BPD

6. Outline potential treatment options

Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology

University of Massachusetts Amherst


Dr. Dixon-Gordon is an Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and director of the Clinical Affective Science Lab and the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Program at UMass. She received her undergraduate training from the University of Washington, where she worked as a research intern and staff member at the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics (BRTC), directed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. Dr. Dixon-Gordon received her doctoral training from Simon Fraser University working with Alex Chapman, Ph.D., and completed her internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center with Kim Gratz, Ph.D.

 

In her research, Dr. Dixon-Gordon uses clinical trials, ecological momentary assessment, and laboratory studies to better understand the difficulties associated with emotion regulation and its treatment. Dr. Dixon-Gordon has published nearly 100 papers, books, and chapters in this area, and served as an investigator on numerous grant-funded studies of DBT and self-injury. She has been identified as an Association for Psychological Science as a Rising Star. In addition, Dr. Dixon-Gordon is a certified DBT clinician, and has trained clinicians across the country in DBT.
