Practical Ethics in Challenging Times: Ethical Decision-Making and Practice, Boundaries and Multiple Relationships, Telepsychology, and Clinical Supervision
This webinar focuses on key issues relevant to the ethical, legal, and clinically effective practice of psychology in the areas of risk management and ethical decision making, boundaries and multiple relationships, telepsychology and integrating various technologies into practice, and ethics, legal, and clinical issues relevant to clinical supervision. Standards to which psychologists are held are reviewed and guidance is provided for fulfilling our ethical obligations. A model for ethical decision-making is reviewed to effectively respond to ethical dilemmas. Risk management strategies are reviewed for optimizing client outcomes while reducing liability risk for psychologists. Relevant professional standards are reviewed and a model for promoting ethical practice is presented. The role of diversity and individual differences is addressed for each of the topics discussed. Common challenges and dilemmas in boundaries and multiple relationships, when integrating technology into practice and practicing telepsychology, and in clinical supervision are addressed and recommendations for ethical, legal, and effective practice are provided to best meet ongoing client needs are addressed.
Jeffrey E. Barnett, Psy.D., ABPP is a licensed psychologist and is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Psychology and in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. Additionally, he is a Distinguished Practitioner in Psychology of the National Academies of Practice. He also is a Professor of Psychology at Loyola University Maryland. He is a nationally recognized expert in ethics and legal issues for mental health professionals and has served as chair of the ethics committees of the Maryland Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Board of Professional Psychology. He also has served as the Vice Chair of the Maryland Psychology Licensing Board. Dr. Barnett has numerous publications to include 13 books and over 250 articles and book chapters and over 400 professional presentations that focus on ethics, legal, and professional practice issues for mental health professionals. Among many other awards, he is the recipient of the APA’s Outstanding Ethics Educator Award.
